Recently, one of our Night Nursing Supervisors, Gay Hawkins, received a frantic phone call from a lady who was screaming, crying and yelling. The lady was frantic and expressing suicidal thoughts. Gay calmly spoke to her and asked her if she could hang in there and just talk with her. She asked for her phone number and address. The lady agreed to talk. Gay had her on the speaker phone; as the lady was explaining all that had happened, Gay used another phone to call "911." The address was in Norfolk so she had to be transferred from the Portsmouth 911 to Norfolk 911. The second 911 operator came on the line and Gay quickly explained the situation. Gay told the lady that help was on the way and she stayed on the phone with her. Gay told her to open the door when help arrived. She stated she was afraid to open the door for fear that it could be her husband who may have returned to harm her. Gay told her to open the door only when she saw flashing lights on a police car or an ambulance. When the knock came, she screamed out to Gay that help was there but she refused to let them touch her until she got back on the phone to thank Gay. The call ended and she was rushed to another facility. It was through Gay's compassion and persistence that this lady's life was saved. Gay was GOOD HELP to someone in need.
