When Zhenzhen and I came to the bedside of a patient, her son said excitedly, "Sister Zhenzhen, it is so nice that you are working today. This morning the doctor said we could go home today. Thank you so much for caring for us!" The patient smiled and looked at Zhenzhen happily. Zhenzhen gave the patient a big hug, who leaned on her arms with joy and gratefulness.
The patient came to our unit with intestinal obstruction. She is a deaf-mute, and so is her husband. The patient is illiterate and does not use sign languages. She cried when she was in pain and she did not like her mother-in-law's company. She did not sleep at night and held her son's hand pointing at the spot in pain. Her son got exhausted just after a few nights.
Zhenzhen was the only nurse who could help the patient to comply with the treatment plan. She always understood the patient and responded quickly. Zhenzhen comforted her by gently touching her hands, her hair and tidying her clothes, which also gave her son some time to rest. Zhenzhen became her most trusted person. One day, the patient had to get an IV catheter and she refused by putting the nurse away. The nurse had to call Zhenzhen back when she was having lunch. Zhenzhen came and the patient leaned on her arm immediately. Zhenzhen hugged her, smoothed her wrinkles between the eyebrows, and looked at her gently. Later, the patient accepted the IV catheter and got her medication in time.
I am so impressed that Zhenzhen cared so much for a patient with communication deficiency, during which she showed her great understanding, insight, and caring. She made the patient feel safe and loved. Thank you so much for giving sincerity, confidence, and love!
