My father-in-law was admitted to CMC for his final visit and spent his last 3 days of life in the ICU and was cared for by an exceptional nurse named Francis Bergonio, RN.
Somehow Francis knew that he had been chosen to care for an extraordinary man. This was a man who believed that the sun rose and set by his grandchildren. A loving man who treasured every opportunity he had to share an adventure with his favorite little playmates and cohorts in crime. This was a man who earned the coveted title of "Favorite Pop Pop".
Although P was intubated and obtunded, and could not share his stories with Francis, somehow Francis must have known that he was chosen to share the last moments of a life well lived with those who knew they would never share another Nascar race, Monster truck show at Wall stadium, or a blazing hot day at Great Adventure with P. Francis must have known that a bright light that once guided this family was being extinguished and it was somehow up to him to help this family through this difficult time. In the days that followed P's passing, as we shared our sorrows, memories, and stories, many family members approached me to comment on the amazing care they all received from Francis.
What we do know, is that this experience was not unique for Francis. I'm sure many families share his empathy and support, believing that Francis considers their loved one the most important patient that he has to care for. This is the mark of an exceptional nurse.
A nurse who provides skilled nursing care with confidence, utilizing best practices and critical thinking skills to provide the best care is always appreciated and acknowledged for their clinical excellence and deserves every recognition.
But a nurse who provides compassionate care, gives generously of his time, heart and soul to people who can acknowledge this even in their worst time of grief is an exceptional nurse. Francis is one of those nurses who possess both the skills of clinical excellence and the depth of compassion to soothe the souls of those facing profound loss. This is a DAISY Nurse.
