The definition of empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. I have never worked with a nurse who exemplifies that quality as well as Flannery. When a patient is hurting, Flannery hurts with them. When a family is grieving, she grieves with them. The love Flannery shows each patient she cares for is genuine. She uses empathy as her drive to be a phenomenal patient advocate, not just for children in her daily assignments, but through the PICU's Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP). It's on this team that her empathy turns into action, ensuring safety and quality for patients in the future. Her coworkers feel the love, too. From being the last one to take a break to simply asking how your day is going, she wants to know how she can help. She is a true DAISY Nurse.

Flannery joined Johns Hopkins All Children's six years ago in one of our ICU fellowship cohorts. We have watched her grow into a well-respected and amazing intensive care nurse. She is often recognized by her patients, families, and colleagues for the kind, compassionate care that she provides. Her service excellence shines through every shift that she works, even during some of the most challenging circumstances. Flannery is a role model within her home unit, but also with her peers throughout the hospital. We are so thankful to have her on our team. Flannery, thank you for your commitment to patient and family-centered care.
