Faye is the care manager for our unit. She and I worked with a patient and his family for almost 2 weeks. The patient had a broken hip and we received him post surgery. He had become quite deconditioned quickly and failed his swallow evaluation. The family did not want a PEG tube and we had great difficulties placing an NG. The family had many concerns regarding his nutrition status and was at the bedside constantly.
Faye was so wonderful with both the patient and his family. She worked diligently to address their concerns and to further their requests while also working within the patient's limitations. The family didn't always understand all the difficulties in feeding the patient and Faye was with them all the way, explaining exactly what was happening and why the doctors had to take that route. Her ongoing compassion for both the patient and his family helped keep the situation under control. Faye made herself available to the family no matter what else she was involved in. Ultimately, the patient did have a PEG tube placed and was discharged to rehab. At discharge, the family was very grateful for all her hard work and attention.
She was a wonderful care partner for this patient for the rest of the staff as well and she is deserving of a DAISY Award.
