We had a patient who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She was at home on hospice. She had a fractured leg and was in a cast. Her daughter called and informed Eunice Castillo that her mom was way too weak and sick to come in to have her cast removed. Her daughter wanted her to be comfortable during this time. Her daughter's fear was that her mom would pass, and how would she have the cast removed then?
Eunice went above and beyond to help this patient. Eunice's caring heart started making phone calls to help ensure that this patient was taken care of and as comfortable as possible. She took the time to help her daughter feel that the staff cares about her mom. Instead of informing the patient and daughter that we do not make house calls, she informed them that this was not protocol, but this was a unique situation. She took all appropriate steps with her Department Administrator and had someone come to her home to take care of her, and remove the cast. Eunice could have just dismissed this and said sorry we do not have staff that comes to your home. But instead, she did what the most exceptional RN should do. She took the time and did what was right. She cared. She made this patient's last few days a little more comfortable. Showing that Kaiser Permanente's staff is top notch! Going above and beyond for our patients. Eunice does this day in and day out. Kaiser is very lucky to have her a part of this organization.
