...My father became a patient at WakeMed after suffering cardiac arrest while driving to the hardware store. Over the course of my dad's stay in the Cardio ICU, Eric Hill was often assigned to my dad, ministering to his critical medical needs while simultaneously helping my mom, and us four siblings, cope with the crisis.

Eric exemplifies all that you would expect in a nursing professional and much, much more. His knowledge, experience, understanding, compassion and commitment to his patients are unparalleled.

...

Eric educated our family on the Hypothermic Treatment, explaining every stage in detail, while addressing our concerns and fears in a direct, but compassionate manner. Eric was approachable and never trivialized a concern or directed us to someone else, even when he wasn't personally assigned to dad. On many occasions, Eric would stop by dad's room to check on his progress on his own personal time. Eric's deep, yet gentle voice would say, "Mr. P, how you doing, man?" "Squeeze my hand, Mr. P." Then in a chuckle, Eric would say, "Come on man, I know you're stronger than that!"

Eric encouraged our family to stay by dad's side during his most critical days. We had somewhat of an entourage in his room at times, but that never seemed to bother Eric. He quietly worked around us, explaining every procedure in detail and calming our every nerve when dad's monitors would loudly beep. Eric truly understands the balance between health care and human care. He handled both with a delicate hand and a compassionate heart. To me, this is something that cannot be taught. It is about the inherent qualities that you are born with that make a great nurse.

We believe Eric Hill is a well deserving candidate for this DAISY Award at WakeMed. Eric played an instrumental role in saving our dad's life and lifting up our family during the darkest days. The world needs more nurses like Eric, and we feel tremendously blessed to have met him. The P Family will always hold his knowledge, friendship, and respect close to our hearts.

Eric was the first nurse I encountered after my husband was admitted to ICU. He was so supportive to me and our 4 children - explaining every detail of the treatment. He encouraged us to continue to speak to my husband even though he was in an induced coma, as he said "he hears you" and knows you are here. He stayed by our sides, held our hands with upmost compassion. His smile was always upbeat. We want to express our heartfelt appreciation for the kindness and excellent care Eric gave my husband. His sensitivity and support helped us through what was a very difficult time.

After 4 months, my husband is back working part time, driving and attending cardio rehab 3 times a week, doing very well. Thanks again to everyone at WakeMed. Eric is definitely a great player on your ICU Team.
