Our mother was transported to the Emergency Department after having suffered a massive heart attack. My brother and I arrived at the ER and were allowed to proceed to her treatment area. As we entered her treatment area, we found Emily Roser holding our mom's hand as mom spoke to her. Emily was looking directly into mom's eyes and neither of them initially realized we had entered the room.
Our 93-year-old mother arrived at the hospital with a POST form that had recently been completed by her Physician. The ER personnel had her connected to 02, a 12 lead EKG monitor, and they were waiting for some of her blood work results. The ER physician informed us that her condition was not good. He then spoke to our mom, Emily held her hand the entire time he spoke, explaining that they would be moving her to a hospital room when one became available.
Our mom spent a couple of hours in the ER with Emily professionally and compassionately attending to her. Emily did everything she could do to make mom comfortable. Mom really wanted to see her great grandchildren and requested this of Emily. Emily listened attentively, stated that it may not be possible, but she would check. We were surprised when the great grandchildren were allowed in for a few short minutes. Mom was so grateful. When Emily would leave the room to take care of other patients, mom would state, "She is just the best!"
I recently retired as a Battalion Chief from the Spokane Fire Department after 38 years of service. During this time, I have had the opportunity to witness medical care provided to thousands of patients. Having an emergency medical provider that not only possesses an excellent skill set but demonstrates genuine patient compassion is a wonderful combination. Our entire family wants to thank and recognize Emily for the care she gave our beloved mother and the gift she gave our family! Mom passed in the evening, and she was so grateful to have seen her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Thank you.
