Emily is always there for her fellow staff and patients. Going above and beyond is part of her daily routine. However, last week I watched her do something that no one wants to do.

One of her patients was a beautiful baby boy to first time parents. Throughout the day, she was in and out of that room in addition to her other four patients, but had to give some special comforting to those absolutely terrified parents. At around 6p, the team decided that the patient needed an MRI in order to see if he was safe to receive an LP. There were no longer any nurses downstairs in MRI to help take care of the patient, so without hesitation Emily stepped up. She got the patient ready, gathered her papers, and soothed this crying mother as they prepared to go to MRI.

Emily gave report on her other four patients and stayed down with family for the duration of the test rather than having the night shift nurse take over since she had formed a rapport with the family. Upon return to the floor, the attending met Emily and the family and began an incredibly difficult discussion about the patient's prognosis. Emily comforted the family again and didn't get home until late that night.

This is just one example of the kind of care Emily does on a daily basis. She truly puts her patients first every time she comes to work and is a superb example of what a pediatric nurse should be.
