Emily is frequently involved in difficult situations as she is so very dependable and is known as a "go-to" person to find solutions to the hard questions we encounter in healthcare. This week we had a very sick septic patient in ICU, and her sisters had been called by our intensivist nurse practitioner on Sunday evening to come from California to be with her.
Monday morning, approximately 14 hours later, they arrived straight from the airport by taxi with their baggage and were listening to a very difficult and sad conversation during Interdisciplinary Rounds about their sister's poor condition in ICU. They had many questions but also needed to be able to get to their sister's house to establish where they were going to stay and to check on the patient's cats. A fellow ICU family member/visitor in the waiting room had already offered to drive them to the patient's house, but when Emily heard this during rounds, she offered immediately to drive them there herself. They were so relieved to have this very useful assistance as they did not know how to take an Uber or Lyft and were apprehensive about utilizing a newly installed Google Earth app on their iPhones to navigate their way around Paulding county.
Emily quickly finished her immediate work, giving the family time to talk to their sister, letting her know they were there and taking care of things. Emily and the sisters loaded their luggage in her SUV and drove to the patient's house. Once there, she helped the sisters find the car keys to the patient's car and she was also able to get some background information on the patient's condition and home meds she was taking prior to her hospitalization that proved helpful to her care.
This isn't the first time that Emily has gone above and beyond to assist patients or family members in need during the worst moments in their lives. Her quality of care is exemplary, and her level of engagement is respectable. I want to recognize the strong work and outstanding level of compassion that she brings to the profession of nursing every day and always has.
