Emilie took care of a confused 36-year-old patient with a history of Werneke-Korsakoff syndrome. She was in the hospital for 20 days and her hair had matted badly to her scalp. Emilie first tried to use conditioner and a comb but realized it was a losing battle. She received permission from the patient to cut out the mats. Emilie had a concern that there may be sores or pressure areas on the scalp we were unable to visualize.
Emilie took several hours, carefully cutting only the chunks of hair that could not be saved. Emilie, with the help of a PCA, who is also a hairstylist, cut her hair into a cute bob. Emilie rewashed the patient's hair and blow dried it. She used so much extra time on her shift that could've gone to charting to care for this patient. She also made the patient feel better, and the whole unit gave the patient many compliments on her new style! Emilie always goes above and beyond the call of duty, and I truly am impressed by her compassion with all patients. She is an extraordinary nurse!
