One of the most unique aspects of St. David's South Austin Medical Center is that our team is like family, and when one department is grieving, we all pull together to support each other in whatever way possible. Unfortunately, as a busy trauma center, we occasionally face the harrowing challenge of when our loved ones, including family, friends, and coworkers, become our patients. When one of our own CVRU nurses was critically injured in dirt bike accident and ultimately had care withdrawn, Liz Loving (ED evening shift supervisor) took it upon herself to contact several ED staff members and arrange for them to help cover CVRU for a few hours so that the CVRU nurses could take time to say their goodbyes to their coworker. Lukas Magalee, Alexis Carreon, and Alfredo Salazar came in on their days off to cover phones, watch monitors, and perform patient care tasks, allowing the staff on the unit to grieve together. The loss of a coworker can be devastating in any organization, though it is difficult times like these that highlight how special the culture is here at South Austin Medical Center.
