It was our first night with our daughter. My wife and I both tried to sleep, but feedings and just overall happiness made it difficult. The nurses would come and go, checking on my wife and daughter, and we were so thankful. There was one nurse in particular that came in and was just a tiny bit different. All the nurses were so kind, but she oozed love. Not only for our child but for her job. I recall the first night, barely awake and laying on my pillow looking across the room as this woman whom we had known for a few hours handling our new baby. I'm sure any new parent can relate to sleeping with one eye open when people are around your children. My wife was in the restroom, and it was just the baby and me, who likely appeared to be sleeping. I watched Elizabeth from across the room gently check the vitals on my daughter. I watched her delicately perform her job duties, and as she was about to listen to breathing, I saw her rub the round part of the stethoscope on her wrist for a solid 5 seconds to warm it up before placing it on my daughter. She was warming it up! I don't know how or why this wrenched on my heart, but it did. I continued to watch her as she gently rubbed our baby to comfort her until my wife returned. She did not know I was awake, and although I feel all nurses perform their job to an ethical standard, the way Elizabeth did it was from the heart, not the brain. The following night, our baby was cluster feeding from 11pm-5am pretty much straight. Elizabeth came in and offered suggestions during the period, and around 5 am suggested she take the baby for a little bit so mom and dad could get an hour or 2 of sleep. In the same breath of offering to take the baby, she explained she would do some tests and then hold the baby for a little bit. My Lord, my heart was full. We needed sleep, my poor wife was on night 3 of literally zero quality sleep, and this nurse recognized that help was needed and offered it. Elizabeth felt like family, I trusted her wholeheartedly after watching the love and attention she gave the night before, and after she took our little angel, we were able to sleep knowing our baby was in fantastic hands. In life, you cannot teach the love, attention, and kindness that Elizabeth offered. I will speak of her kindness for the rest of my life when I talk about our birth story. That is special, Elizabeth is special, and I hope she continues to serve parents with the same care as she did for us.
