My son and I were here in CHLA for 24 days. My son has psychosis and has special needs. He had surgery for a small bowel obstruction. Weeks later, he had not had a bowel movement yet. I was uncomfortable taking him home in that condition. An x-ray revealed his stomach was not emptying. He had to have an NG tube put back in for 3 days to empty his stomach. After several days of treatments, he still wasn't having any stool. Then, Eileen was his nurse. She was able to accomplish more in her advocating for us in the first 3 hours of her first shift than I had been able to in several days. As a result of her diligence, and her walking him about 3-4 miles each day without me, he starting having stool. While she was in the room, she was completely focused on him and his every want and need. She insisted on me taking some time for myself. There was a way about Eileen that could get him to do things without him getting aggressive, which he has done while we were here. We finally went home to our family and I give Eileen all the credit for that happening. Eileen is an exceptional nurse: kind, caring and compassionate with a knack for getting kids and parents to trust her and just enough silly to keep kids calm. Thank you for the opportunity to let her know how awesome I think she is.
