I recently had 3 outpatient eye surgeries within a 5-week period and was fortunate to have Dusty Brooks as my PreOp nurse for each surgery. While being prepped for those surgeries, he exhibited outstanding nursing and communication skills with all of the patients in the room. He was efficient in his tasks while setting a tone of ease through his conversations with the patients and his co-workers. His music choice was relatable for his audience and added to the positive environment he created. Dusty has the unique ability to relate directly to each patient as he works on them, adapting to their needs for encouragement, support, or answering their general questions. He shares bits and pieces of his personal life and history which sets the stage for dialogue. I personally related to his military background knowing firsthand the effects of this on one's family and civilian work life.
When IV prep was not going smoothly for me due to small and uncooperative veins, Dusty did not give any hint of panic. Without embarrassment, he asked for assistance and took the ribbing from his co-workers in stride and with humor! I would like him to know that he has a true gift with one of the gentlest senses of touch when he palpates for veins which reminds me of a surgeon's touch. This one technique has an unbelievably calming effect on the patient and I interpreted the action as a genuine sense of caring. In the end, it was Dusty's ability to connect with me that impressed me the most and I feel blessed to have been under the care of this fine gentleman.
