Drew was a blessing for my husband and our family during his stay in the hospital. Drew showed empathy and compassion while at the same time being firm and ensuring my husband was doing the correct things to get out of the hospital. Drew listened to our concerns/questions and explained anything we asked - if he didn't know he would find out. Drew also identified that my husband was showing signs of an infection after the second surgery, even without having a fever. Drew acted swiftly and called the doctor and was able to get my husband on the right path to healing. Each day when we knew Drew was on shift, we knew it would be a good day. Drew had such a caring attitude. He celebrated the small milestones and encouraged my husband at the most vulnerable time in his life. If my husband was not up for walking, Drew would negotiate a time with him and come back at that time. He was also an excellent teacher. He personally taught me how to pack the wound, flush the IR drain, and flush the PICC line, and went over multiple times what to look for if something went wrong. My husband had a lot going on and Drew was able to reassure me that I would be able to take care of him at home.
When we were leaving my husband was very nervous and quite frankly scared. Even though he wanted to leave the hospital for weeks, he was afraid that some other complication would happen at home and it could be life-threatening. My husband was overwhelmed with emotions and Drew was so kind and talked with him so calmly and reassured him everything would be okay and the doctors would not let him go home if it wasn't time. I sat there and just admired Drew for his professionalism and compassion. He didn't rush my husband and wanted to make sure we were as comfortable as possible before we headed home. There is nothing good about a hospital stay and we had many good nurses, however, Drew stood out to us the most.
