With both clinical and administrative responsibilities, Dorothy goes beyond her daily duties to ensure that her co-workers and patients are having a great experience. She truly understands the stressful nature of the operating room and the interconnectedness of each facet of the surgical experience. She is professional with an unparalleled work ethic, often passing up on breaks to make sure things get done appropriately and to ensure a smooth process in the operating room. Whether it's in person, or via phone/email, she spends countless hours coordinating with surgeons, central supply/processing, and company reps to make sure that everything needed for the patient is available. Less than a year into her role as charge nurse for pediatric orthopedics, she took a nearly impossible job that few wanted and has truly stood out as nothing short of exemplary. Despite being short-staffed, she continues to push forward in supporting a large and growing orthopedic department with multiple egos and personalities.
From a clinical standpoint, she's a very compassionate nurse. I've noticed my patients and their parents feel at ease and comfortable with her in the pre-operative area, making the stressful experience the best it can possibly be. Moreover, once in the operating room, she is a patient-advocate and takes excellent care of my patients-from transitioning to the OR table to induction of anesthesia and patient positioning. In addition, she is extremely funny, always has a smile on her face (or under her mask) and is truly a pleasure to have in the operating room.
I have received multiple cards/letters from patients thanking me for all of my hard work in helping them recover from their injuries. I share these cards with her because I can honestly say I wouldn't be able to do my job without her; her hard work does not go unnoticed. She is humble and unassuming, but I think we should share her story of compassion and tireless work ethic for her patients, families, and co-workers.
