Doris earns her DAISY
________________________________________
The Scottish poet James Montgomery once said, “The rose has but a summer reign; the daisy never dies.”
With this in mind, DAISY seems to be an appropriate name for a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates the ongoing extraordinary and compassionate care given by nurses every single day of the year.
Doris Harrell, RN, Third Floor, was recently honored after demonstrating extraordinary support during a tragic event. Her nomination came after a young man was admitted to the hospital as a result of a gunshot wound that eventually proved fatal.
“[Harrell] provided professional and emotional support to the vast number of family members,” said Pamela Daniels, RN, in her nomination form. “Her calm demeanor and show of empathy aided the family in keeping reasonably calm during their time of grief.”
Third floor manager Jennifer Deveza, RN, echoed Daniels’ sentiment. “Doris prayed and supported the family members and aided in getting [them] to the bedside in a calmer way despite the grief that they were going through.”
The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died of an auto-immune disease at the age of 33. During Barnes’ hospitalization, his family was moved by the care and compassion that was provided by the nurses, and was inspired to create a national award as a way to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere.
