Donna Parente is a nurse who cares for her patients with professionalism, empathy and compassion. She is the epitome of a highly skilled, competent RN, demonstrated particularly by her relationship with H and his family.

Donna developed a strong bond with this young man and his family and became a strong advocate in his care. Her dedication as a pediatric oncology nurse was evident, exhibited by her patience and commitment. She instilled hope in this family and was always sensitive and caring in her approach. H's complex medical diagnosis made his care very challenging. Donna immediately developed a positive rapport with H and his mom, allowing autonomy and high quality nursing care.

Although H's prognosis became terminal, Donna worked tirelessly to collaborate with the healthcare team to provide support and comfort measures to this patient and his family. It was eventually decided to admit H for palliative end of life care until his passing. Every day that Donna was scheduled to work, as well as days off, she spent countless hours with H and his mom on the inpatient unit. She would sit with H's mom so she would not be alone until her husband could come in the evening, after he finished work. She was committed to being there for them for the entire 6 weeks H was in the hospital until his death. I visited him a few times with Donna and she would talk to H and stroke his cheek and even though he was comatose at the end, I truly believe he knew Donna was there. She was such a positive influence and strong comfort especially to mom who hardly ever left H's bedside. Many times Donna offered to stay with him so she can go to a doctor's appointment or run home for a change of clothes. She felt extreme comfort knowing that Donna was with H when she wasn't there.

I know that Donna Parente went above and beyond with this patient and family. Her devotion and unwavering presence in their lives captured the essence of a trusting nurse-patient/family relationship. I believe she was a tremendous asset to H's mom and pivotal in helping her and their extended family decide to stop treatment when H's cancer was spreading. Through her support and guidance it empowered his mom to make this very difficult decision.

Donna is outstanding, confident and an expert pediatric oncology nurse. She is extremely organized and competent and is a strong advocate for her patient and families. Donna is not afraid to work with challenging and often complex patients. She is well respected by her peers and the entire healthcare team. She has excellent interpersonal as well as clinical assessment skills. Donna can problem solve and prioritize under a very stressful work environment in Smilow, always maintaining professionalism and composure in her interactions.
