A 16 year old patient with multiple medical problems had limited vision in his left eye and underwent a vitrectomy and lensectomy in his right eye under general anesthesia. While preparing for discharge Donna learned that the patient and his father had taken multiple buses to get to the hospital and were going to do so again to get home. The patient was recovering from anesthesia, had his right eye patched and had limited vision in his left. He would need his father to guide him in walking and getting on and off buses; it was also a rainy stormy afternoon.

Donna decided immediately that this was not an option for this post operative patient. Donna called the manager of a local tranportation office that specializes in patient transport. She explained the situation and informed them that the patients safety was on the line. The manager called back and stated that he would send a driver to pick up the patient and his father and drive them home. The father was so grateful that Donna could make this happen. Donna called the patient the next day to learn that they made the hour drive home safely. The patient's father again expressed his gratitude for the compassion that Donna provided them.
