Dianne Ruth Yaris is one of the best CCU staff I have worked with as a Cardiologist here in KSMC.
When I was at KSMC, she was the one who oriented me with CCU, its routine and protocol, and how to use the MEDISYS program on the computer. She was very patient in teaching us how to code the medication, how to write the discharge summary, even what to write. She would patiently follow and correct us in a very respectful manner when we made mistakes in our documentation. She is very much committed to the safety of the patients. She ensures that each ordered medication follows the components of medication whenever we write orders.
I observe her with how she deals with her patients. She is soft-spoken, patient, and very compassionate when caring for her patients. She patiently explains to them their due treatment and why the treatment is needed. I usually observe her tirelessly doing rounds and announcing to her colleagues time to turnsides. She would help her colleagues whenever she is free. Later on, I learned that she is a charge nurse of CCU and one of her jobs is to make sure that all the policies and procedures in patient safety are followed because according to her it is her duty to ensure that all her patients receive safe and quality care, hence she is following all medications orders to avoid medication errors that will compromise the safety of CCU patient. She announces turn to sides to ensure the bedridden patients will not develop bedsores, side rails up to prevent her patients from falling.
Being a charge nurse does not hinder her from being with her patients. She said that her colleagues take care of a maximum of two patients while she has to take care of 24 patients and she needs to ensure that all those patients receive safe and quality care. She needs to ensure that all 24 patients have the best experience at CCU. One of the best CCU staff traits is asking for a discount for non-eligible cases due for discharge home. Dianne is no exemption. She would not stop until the business center gives a discount to her patient. She would find ways and means to send her patient with home medications especially those eligible cases, patiently explain to them why they need those medications and the importance of a clinic follow up. She is very committed to making her patients comfortable while they are at CCU.
I observed that she establishes very good relationships with her colleagues. They help one another no matter how busy the duty is. Ms. Dianne and her colleagues always keep their cool, patiently speak to us even if we are so tired and exhausted already with 5 - 8 admission, still they find something amusing in our situation. Her team always makes each 16 hours of duty at CCU bearable. She would always say that they are willing to help us, Physicians, but only at the jobs dictated by their job description. She and her colleagues show us, Physicians, respect even if sometimes we are at the edge of our patience with so much work. At a time when you want to shout because of exhaustion and dead tired body and brain, you will look at their team looking at you with a question mark and a smile, their energy and commitment to ensure their patient receives safe care is contagious. For all of this, I want to recognize Ms. Dianne for being an extraordinary nurse. She is indeed extraordinary as a direct caregiver and as a leader of her team.
