We had a patient in ICU for several days with a possible anoxic brain injury. If you know anything about this population of patients, they can be quite difficult to deal with at times for various reasons. This particular patient was quite confused, constantly trying to get up (most certainly would have fallen), always disheveled in her bed and just all in all a difficult patient to care for. Diane tried many activities to keep this patient busy and distract her from trying to get up. She had her color, she asked her to make a birthday card, got her in a chair to watch TV, etc. After responding to the chair and bed alarm countless times during her shift; Di decided to bring the patient, in her recliner, out to the hallway. She set the patient in her cubby area and talked to her, listened to her stories, walked her up and down the hall, helped her exercise her voice to increase her chances of passing a swallow study. She was so patient and so very kind to this lady. Di was able to keep up on her charting while also taking great care of this patient. It's likely that the patient won't remember Diane, but I know that I will. She has always been an amazing nurse to her patients, teacher to other nurses and friend to all.
