I wanted to take a minute to let you know about the outstanding example of nursing I witnessed earlier this month. As you know, Diane often goes above and beyond to meet the needs of her patients and families.
Last week, Diane was assigned a challenging patient - Mr. P who by virtue of a probably undiagnosed psychiatric illness and personality disorder frustrated and alienated many staff members who attempted to care for him. He had very particular ideas about how his care should be done that made caring for him inefficient and challenging. To add to this, he was suspicious of many members of the healthcare team and had wounds that could be smelled clear down the hallway. Despite this, Diane was able to build a rapport with the patient on her shift the following day. She and the patient had been discussing their favorite foods after the patient had become tired of all the menu options after being hospitalized for more than a month. Diane remembered this and after work stopped by a market and picked up a gourmet take-out meal for the patient. When I came to see him, she was cutting up the beef, fingerling potatoes and asparagus for him to enjoy. He was delighted and for the first time in many days he smiled - his spirits seemed renewed. Very touching.
