Diana Burke, a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at Mayo Clinic Health System – Northland in Barron, has been chosen as a recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for recognizing the fear and anxiety of an injured child and his parents, and putting them at ease.
Burke’s nomination was prompted by a thank-you note from N of Cameron after her 4-year-old son B was brought into the Emergency Department with a fractured arm. N writes to Diana, “Thank you for the extremely positive experience we had in your care last night. You managed our son’s pain and fear — and our own distress — so beautifully, and all in the context of what appeared to be a very busy evening.” “She was the best combination of compassionate and efficient, and made us feel — on behalf of our son — safe, well cared for and absolutely grateful for the quality of care we received,” referring to Diana.
According to Burke, it had been an evening of long waits due to a high number of critical patients. “I checked on this family quite often not only to see how they were doing, but also to keep them informed of the delays we were experiencing due to high patient volumes,” she explains. “I also try to remember that nobody likes to be in the Emergency Department because it generally isn't a good day when they are here,” Burke adds. “I try to treat them how I would like my family member treated. Always greet them with a smile and remembering that you don't get a second chance on a first impression.”
“I was very honored and surprised to get the award. It is hard to be singled out as we are such a great team, and I would never be able to do what I do without the help of my team, “says Burke. “I feel honored to work for such a great facility.”
