You do what you know is right. These are the words of Desmond Forrest, RN, on Inpatient Medicine as he precepts a new nurse recently hired to the unit. More than mere words of wisdom for others, these words exemplify Desmond's commitment to his patients. He has worked in Inpatient Medicine for over 16 years and remains steady, calm and efficient. His approach to patients is respectful, genuine and caring. He takes time with his patients and does not rush through the questions and concerns they have for him. He provides reassurance. He is consistently "present" while caring for them. The work on Inpatient Medicine can be quite challenging and stressful, and at times tensions run high and care can be difficult. Desmond has the ability to step back, stay calm and think clearly. He does not let situations negatively affect him. He never complains or shows his own distress. Instead, he uses a flash of humor to connect with co-workers, and thereby diffuse the tension. He is warm and approachable, always cheerful and ready to work.
Desmond is an invaluable resource for staff. He has precepted countless new staff nurses during their orientation to Inpatient Medicine and to the Float Pool. Any and all RNs who have been precepted by him, are the fortunate recipients of continued mentoring long after the first months and years of nursing practice have gone by. He is an expert nurse and we are all beneficiaries of his professional practice. Clinically, he provides care to his patients that demonstrates a commitment to safety. His mantra, "You do what you know is right," ensures that there are no shortcuts or workarounds when it comes to meeting the needs of his patients. He collaborates with team members and communicates effectively with providers. He takes the time to explain the plan of care to his patients and their families and then takes the additional time to check for understanding and answers any questions. Desmond exhibits an extraordinary commitment to patient-centered care. He recently had a patient with complex needs and by taking the initiative to respond to him quickly and consistently, the patient was reassured and care proceeded smoothly. Desmond's first priority is always the needs of his patient.
