The world would be so much fuller with more nurses like "the Amazing Derrick". He was the best nurse I had the pleasure of being with during a very scary time in my health. Derrick's passion for nursing was incredibly comforting and put me at ease when so much felt uncertain in my life. As a former RN and nursing instructor, I can tell you that he has a gift for putting his patients and their families at ease. He was incredibly responsive to my needs in the ICU and listened intently to my stories, concerns and fears. He was gentle in his care and explained things to us at every step. He was the one nurse who explained to us how to keep one of the heart monitors from sounding off unnecessarily, enabling me to rest easier.
We enjoyed sharing stories and my daughter gave him a Christmas gift of hand lotions for his caring hands to show our appreciation for his craft and support in a scary time. If anyone meets the PETALS criteria, it is "the Amazing Derrick".

Derrick demonstrated each of the PETALS criteria while providing exceptional care for my mother. His compassion, empathy and warmth surpassed any nurse that she had. My mother dubbed him "the Amazing Derrick" and he was the weekend nurse for her on Christmas Eve weekend. He witnessed several states of her recovery for the short time under his care, but she would wait until he came on rotation for things like moving her in the bed. He was incredibly gentle and attentive to her every need. My mom is a retired nurse, so she's not the best patient, but she was always confident that her care was top notch with Derrick. She was delighted to hear that he was on the path to becoming a NP, and she communicated her appreciation of his skill and his gifts of true compassion, selflessness, and an obvious love for his professional role as an ICU nurse.
I always felt secure taking a coffee break when Derrick was caring for mom. He was so attentive and informative - it felt as if he was always in her room and he radiated warmth and confidence. I hope that every patient has an opportunity to receive the level of care we saw with him. He truly loves his job, his teammates and his patients.
