Denise was caring for a patient with postpartum depression who was having trouble coping after her baby was discharged home. Denise had a very calming presence and discussed the plan of care with the patient. When the patient indicated that she was having trouble being in the room after 5 days, in spite of her full assignment, Denise accompanied the patient outside for lunch at the picnic tables near the chapel in a safe area. The patient expressed that she really enjoyed having lunch outside. She was much calmer and able to remain composed afterward. Denise later walked her to the gift shop to get some chocolate and the patient again expressed gratitude for being able to get outside of her room. During all of this, Denise was also working to coordinate care for a safe discharge over a holiday weekend. She was able to advocate for a home health visit to ensure mom and baby were both safe until she could get additional care. Denise's compassionate care enabled this patient to improve enough to be discharged. Her advocacy and care coordination ensured a safe discharge. She did all of this while still providing care for the remainder of her patients.
