I overheard a moment in our Tales from the Bedside portion of nurse residency today and I just want to share. J asked the nurses if they have had a meaningful moment with their patients.
Decker responded and talked about a patient she had that was homeless due to alcoholism. She mentioned he had children but couldn't see them due to his unstable home environment and addiction. She stated that the case manager had asked about taking him to the salvation army downtown, but he mentioned he was trying to work and that his job was nightshift so that was not an option for him.
So, Decker took it upon herself to call around to find a community resource and was able to secure a bed and a meal each day for the patient at a home for men struggling with addiction. He has since called her to give her an update and let her know that he is steadily getting his life back on track and he wanted to thank her for everything that she did for him.
I am so proud of her actions as a nurse and even more as a new grad. I think me and J were almost in tears hearing her tell this story.
