I am probably the youngest known survivor of Nazi's Dr. Josef Mengele's experiments on twins. I told my nurse when she was preparing me for TEE, that I have an "irrational" fear of medical procedures. My nurse introduced herself to me in a gentle tone of voice and helped me to relax by actively listening to me as I told her about a book I had recently read about a person who had survived and thrived after intense trauma. My nurse told me about another similar book called "Educated" for which I was on a 35-person waiting list. I talked a little more about myself and she continued with her active listening, which is what I needed more than anything. I became fully relaxed and my fear left me. The following day I had surgery and after my surgery, when I was transferred to my room, I received a little package in gift wrap paper. The package contained the book we had discussed. It was personally inscribed with a very positive and encouraging message. I will remember her all my life. Thank you for being such a great nurse.
