I had the pleasure of spending time with a 94 year old patient whose body was failing her, but her mind was strong and alert. As I was in the room with this patient, we were discussing the sadness of leaving this life, and those we love, behind. The patient was expressing to me how she was going to miss her family and grandchildren and she also stated there are just some you will miss more than others, and "this one here is one of them", referring to her nurse, Deborah Lemon, who had been caring for her the last several days.

Tears welled up in my eyes and I agreed with her stating, "yes, she is a wonderful nurse", and the patient said she is more than that to me. I then watched the interaction and conversation between Deborah and the patient. Deborah at one point reminded the patient to "not apologize for asking me for something, this is my ministry, and how I serve you is my calling". Deborah went on to tell the patient, "I can't get up in front of the pulpit and preach, so I serve people here at the bedside". She said to the patient, "please don't deprive me of serving you, now what can I do for you"?

I found this interaction between the patient and Deborah an excellent exemplar of caring. Deborah has worked for me for the last 5 years and consistently demonstrates a commitment to caring in unique and tangible ways to her patients. Deborah exhibits a transformational spirit of caring with those she serves. I believe there is no higher praise to be given than a 94 year old woman who says, "this one right here (Deborah) I am going to miss!" Deborah is a leader and example of caring and serving in action. Deborah is the embodiment of being in alignment with her source of caring, healing and strength as she is able to consistently give out and serve others selflessly and consistently. Deborah, who doesn't serve others to be recognized, is most worthy to be honored with a DAISY Award.
