1. Concern for humanity
Deb shows empathy for all the patients in her care. Her soft spoken demeanor is calming and her genuine empathy for her patient’s pain and fear is real. She has a special place in her heart for children in particular. When she cares for a child during surgery, she develops a special bond with that child. Many times she makes a special effort to go see that child before they are discharged. They always have a huge smile for her no matter what they have gone through.

Deb shows respect for all age groups- from unborn child to the most elderly. On one particular occasion, Deb went above and beyond to show care and concern for the family of a still born baby and for the OB staff involved, even after her shift had ended. The mother of the baby was under general anesthesia, and Deb stayed vigilant in order to provide support for the OB staff that had bonded with the family. The tears that she shed with the family and the staff showed how much empathy she had.

2. Most significant contribution to nursing profession
Deb’s most significant contribution to the nursing profession is her communication skills, which are invaluable as a supervisor in the perioperative setting. She has great interpersonal skills and works well with the entire surgical team. She is the glue that holds us together, with her attention to detail. She always has calmness and balances everyone’s needs with ease. Whether she is dealing with a family in crisis, doctor’s attitudes, managing her staff or caring for the patient, Deb handles every situation in a professional manner.

3. Example of leadership through mentoring, or served as a role model for others.
Deb serves as a role model by her leadership every day. She has a strong commitment to the surgical department. She helps to educate the staff by offering CEU programs specific to surgery and is on the products committee to help keep us current on the newest equipment. She is committed to her staff. Deb has a “can do” type of attitude that inspires others. There are many days that she will make sure we all have a lunch break, even if it means skipping lunch herself.

4. Specific event that prompted you to nominate this nurse?
Deb is excellent in any emergency situation. She responds to a crisis like no other nurse I have seen. Here knowledge and skills are impeccable. It’s amazing how calm and level headed she is in an emergency. She went to a code blue in the Emergency Department the other day and her presence put everyone at ease. You want her present in an emergency situation. Deb has gained everyone’s respect. She goes by the rules and everyone admires her professionalism.
