I have had the pleasure of working with Dawn Gosselin for the past 4 years. Dawn is a nurse who all nurses should be modeled after. She is compassionate, kind and truly cares for her patients. Dawn is the nurse who will stay longer with a patient to manage their next level of care. Whether it is just being an ear for them to vent frustrations or helping them to fill out forms for dental care so they don't have to glue their teeth in every day, Dawn is always willing to go the extra mile.
Her documentation is thorough and concise but not at the expense of patient care. It is only after her patients are cared for will you find her sitting at the computer frantically typing to capture the encounter. When not caring for a patient or finishing up her charts, you can always find Dawn going the extra mile to help the unit or to help her peers. She stocks rooms, finishes care for another nurse who is behind, or will help with making phone calls if there is any downtime, which is rare in our clinic.
Dawn truly believes in evidence-based practice and is the first to discuss a patient with a provider to ensure that the patient is receiving the exemplary care they deserve. For years, she was a co-chair for our Annual Wound Healing Symposium and was responsible for resourcing wound care professionals from around the nation to speak to our attendees. Her commitment to the community of wound healing is apparent in this work and her willingness to provide education in the community.
Lastly, Dawn is an educator and leader amongst her peers. We often precept students in their last year of nursing school and new hires within our clinic and Dawn is the person who takes the lead to guide them in their endeavor. She spends the time necessary to not only explain the task, but to explain the purpose of what we do, and how to best explain the process to the patient. She trains new nurses to see the patient as a whole and to address their needs. In fact, we have hired or offered positions to several of the nurses whom Dawn has mentored, as they demonstrate superior skills and abilities due to her tutelage.
Being a provider on our unit, I am consistently impressed not only with Dawn's knowledge and skills but her ability to connect with our patients. She takes pride in all aspects of her work and is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure patient needs are not just being met, but are met at a standard above all others. We are truly fortunate to have Dawn on our team.
