Today, like many days, I witnessed our unit's silent hero do his work. On this particular day, David Bland provided excellent care to a very ill manic patient, but he also created an environment that allowed our 12 other patients on our unit to get the best care possible. His actions focused on patient-centered care by using distraction tools while allowing our other patients to receive the care they are seeking during group therapy. This particular patient was very disruptive to the unit when David saw her slide into group therapy, due to her illness she was unable to remain calm, on topic, or to be a productive member of the group. David called her out of the group and sat one on one to distract the patient. This doesn't seem like a big deal and typically it isn't, as we provide alternative groups regularly. Dave went above and beyond for this acutely ill patient. She was able to remain safe, with a variety of tools, remain off 1:1 and was able to be calm to allow others to get the most out of our program.
