I was admitted as a cancer patient. I was ill from the chemotherapy and had also been diagnosed with lesion in the right breast/lung area. Feeling blue and sorry for myself suddenly changed when a well-groomed, neatly dressed, southern accent young man entered my room. A bad Friday the 13th soon became a delightful one. This courteous nurse, addressing me by "Ma'am", introduced himself and wrote his name on the whiteboard in my room. I commented on the spelling of his name and he shared some personal history with me which made me feel so welcome and relaxed. As we continued to talk I felt as though a friendship was starting. He took time to educate me on my medications and side effects. I was unable to sleep so he made sure to check on me very frequently throughout the night. His cheerful attitude had me watching the clock in anticipation of his next round. This young man has a unique gift that is not possessed by many people. If I ever return I hope we meet again. I have worked in healthcare my entire life and feel Darrick is very special.
