When I think of the DAISY Award, I think of a nurse who shows more compassion and support than the average. I recently met such a young nurse. A patient was in Danielle's care with influenza. She was feeling crummy, an inpatient for a few days, and was finally coming around mentally. Later that morning the patient's son came up to the room to tell Danielle that the patient's husband was in the ER and had just coded.
They got pulses back at the present time, but he had metastatic cancer and the outlook was not good. Danielle did what I hope any nurse would do, she got the patient into a wheelchair, grabbed some oxygen, got some help, and brought the patient down to see her dying husband in the ED. She then waited with her while she said her goodbyes. That patient will never forget the extra mile, that Danielle's patient was able to be there in that moment for her husband. I know if this patient was with it enough today, she would thank Danielle for her care and support she gave her one the worst day of her life. Meeting nurses like Danielle give me hope that the art of love and healing with kindness is not lost. I am so proud to call her my co-worker.
