After having quadruple heart bypass surgery at Baton Rouge General Bluebonnet, I was admitted to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. I was kept heavily sedated initially. However, I recall I was very confused. I vaguely remembered I may have been in surgery. However, the ventilator and throat device I was using had several effects of me. I don't recall being able to see or open my eyes. I was confused, concerned and claustrophobic. I felt if I showed any fear, I might have a panic attack.
After hearing the voice of Nurse Danica Russell, I felt relieved. There was a soothing tone in her voice. I heard "caring", "concern", and felt the compassion in her voice which went beyond professional. She asked me if I was ready to remove my respiratory gear. Her demeanor and voice were so encouraging that I am not sure I would have had the motivation and trust to be able to remove the ventilator without her support.
Danica's compassionate nature, attention to the details of patient care, and nursing ability are extraordinary. I am confident her care led to a much faster recovery for me.
