Through the sad times, difficult patients, and many long hard days, Dani Pense still pulls through and gives the care that patients deserve with the compassion and caring that exemplify the Saint Alphonsus mission statement and commitment to excellence.
We recently had a long-term patient who was difficult to handle due to his mental deficits and Dani was the nurse who went in and took care of him, and calmed him. Dani was extremely patient with him and she didn't even hesitate to help out other nurses who were taking care of him. The rapport she developed with this patient was amazing and her attitude the entire time was fantastic. I was truly impressed with the difference she made with this patient and set the path for others to follow so that they too were successful with him. The transformation of this patient was truly amazing all because Dani spent the time, had the patience and compassion to give him the care he truly needed. The patient would light up, his features would soften and began to call her by name, tease her, and wave hello.
I kept thinking the Dani was the "whisperer" for this patient and I (as well as her other co-workers) appreciate everything she has done. The greatest memory was of a moment not too long ago when Dani was in his room, taking time for him, and playing a game of cards; that's when I knew that she truly deserves a DAISY Award for this extraordinary care. Seeing the patient smiling and laughing out loud was astounding. I am so proud to work with a fellow RN like her and thank her for the incredible job she does every day on 5 South.
