Crystal Boroff has been working in labor and delivery for over a year. She started with us as a graduate nurse and is becoming an excellent labor and delivery nurse. She demonstrates CHRISTUS’s Core Values on a daily basis while helping her patients, their families and her coworkers. This was especially evident when she recently cared for a young first time mom.

Crystal developed a good rapport with her while she was in labor and during the delivery of her baby. The next day, it came to the attention of the neonatologist that the baby was having problems and he wanted the baby to be closely monitored in the NICU. The patient became very fearful and was unwilling to let her baby leave her room. She was crying and very upset. The patient’s current nurse and the social worker as well as the neonatologist all spoke with her about the necessity of monitoring the baby but the patient refused. Crystal, who had another patient assignment that day volunteered to go in and speak with the patient. Crystal was able to spend time with this patient and answer her questions about the plan of treatment for the baby and why it was necessary. Crystal went back and forth between the patient and the neonatologist to get the answers to the patient’s questions and help her to feel more comfortable with the care her baby needed.
Because Crystal had supported the patient the previous day and had built a foundation of trust, the patient was able to listen to Crystal and agree to the plan for her baby.

Crystal demonstrated CHRISTUS’s Core Values of Compassion by not judging the patient’s situation but offering her support and concern about her and her baby. She treated her with Dignity and respect which allowed the patient to listen and make the best decision for her baby. Crystal’s Integrity was evident when she took the time to spend with this patient and go back and forth between the nursery and the patient’s room while answering her questions honestly and completely. Thankfully, due to Crystal’s intervention, this situation had a positive outcome and the patient felt supported and cared for.
