I would like to nominate the Observation Unit for their dedication to helping create the Respiratory Unit. The nurses and NCPs worked together to create processes that benefitted the care of the COVID positive and COVID rule-out patients. It was nurses who tried out the extension tubing on the IV pumps to see how they would work outside the doors. It was a nurse who decided to use FaceTime on her phone to help communicate the family to a dying patient. This led to the use of iPads. These are just a touch of what the Nurses and NCPs have done to get and keep this unit rolling through this unusual time. The staff communicate through the window and get the patients to do as much as they can for themselves in order to keep them motivated and participating in their care. The NCPs and nurses use stretchy bands to help the patient exercise. The staff stay on the outside of the room exercising with the patients to get them back on their feet sooner. The staff have been super compassionate to the patients staying with the patients at the time of their death. It started with the first patient who died on the unit related to COVID. He had no family to say their goodbyes and the staff surrounded his doorway and wept as they watched him pass. Even one of the physicians wept as he saw this sight. Since then, we have made it a practice to do this for every patient that has since passed. This unit truly is a one of a kind. Once the processes were worked out in a very short period of time and the need for more help arose came the expansion of Wendel 2 and the recruitment of help from Cornell 2 and Cornell 3. Such an awesome group of employees as well.
