Colleen transferred to the ICU from the medical/surgical floor two years ago without any previous critical care experience. She made the transition seem effortless as she learned new skills and competencies quickly. She has a natural intuition to assess and react to any number of situations. She has a tremendous work ethic and discipline which serves her well in the sometimes chaotic world of intensive care.
Colleen has already acted as a preceptor for new nurses to our unit and often works with nursing students as well. She is warm and welcoming to new people. Her laugh is contagious and she brings good humor to our work environment regardless of the level of stress.
She exemplifies the core values of integrity, compassion, advocacy, respect and excellence.
Integrity: She is at work on time, ready to go and gives an honest day's work every shift. She finds constructive tasks to do during down time and is always willing to help the other departments as needed.
Compassion: Colleen often goes above and beyond for her patients and shows incredible patience. She adapts care plans to fit the individual and will make the extra effort needed to ensure their comfort and well-being.
Advocacy: Ensuring the patient's concerns are heard and appreciated is at the core of Colleen's nursing. She interacts easily and professionally with all members of the care team and follows up as needed to maintain a focused, goal-oriented plan.
Respect: Being a Veteran herself seems to give Colleen a special connection with our patients. She understands the commitment and sacrifices that are made every day by our servicemen and women. She brings that understanding to bear in her interactions with them and their families, making sure they receive the care they deserve and have earned.
Excellence: Setting a positive example in all aspects of her job is what sets Colleen apart. She maintains a healthy lifestyle that enables her to bring energy to her work day. Her professional appearance and manner instill confidence in her patients that they will be well cared for. She represents the ICU well throughout the hospital.
I am in awe of Colleen's abilities as a nurse and as a person. She has quiet confidence and such strong leadership abilities at a young age. She is a role model to all nurses.
