This summer Colleen was working on 13 West as her home unit, 13 East had merged with our unit. She was on 13 West caring for patients and was assigned to care for a young man who had been admitted from an outside hospital overnight. The patient had fallen earlier in the day while attempting to complete tricks rollerblading. He fell and broke his femur and required surgery. Shortly after he was taken to the hospital, his wife, who was 9 months pregnant with their first child, went into labor and was taken to Rush. As a result of his wife being in labor, he asked to be transferred to Rush. After his arrival, his wife went into active labor and delivered, he was scheduled to go for surgery. He was insistent on getting to see the baby prior to going to surgery. Since he was in traction, he was unable to go down to the Mother Baby Unit. While caring for three other patients, Colleen spent her morning coordinating and talking with all the physicians and the nurses on the Mother Baby Unit to ensure the patient had the opportunity to meet his baby. Shortly before he rolled off to pre-op, the baby was rolled up from the nursery and he was able to meet the baby and hold the baby prior to having surgery. Colleen made all the patient's wishes come true before he went to surgery. The entire unit was in tears watching this happen. Colleen is a true DAISY Nurse because she put the patient's feelings as a priority to his care.
