W had his VAD for a while, and people loved him wherever he would go. He was very knowledgeable about VADs and would advocate for other patients considering one. He was always willing to answer questions and would help assure them they would be okay. He was upbeat and positive, even when he was very sick.
W has lived in Tampa for a long time but has never seen the Gasparilla parade. He thought that if he had the time or opportunity, he would like to see the Gasparilla parade before he dies.
A doctor called the PFA on duty and had this very unusual request: that one of her beloved long-term VAD patients, W, who also has been very instrumental in the VAD support group, was actively dying and his last wish was to be able to watch Gasparilla. He has always wanted to watch the parade and has never been able to. She asked if W could move to the 5K area so he could have his last wish come true.
Rooms were re-arranged, and there was the switching out of a CCU and NSICU RN so his VAD could be maintained.
The staff of NSICU, CCU, Environmental Services, and Transport all came together to make this patient's last wish come true. Our wonderful staff accomplished this mission in 45-60 minutes!
W made it to the NSICU just in time to watch the boat parade, and saw it all!
The next day, W was terminally weaned, and eventually died. He may not have had a new heart, but he died with a happy heart. His last wish was granted by these amazing people that were involved in the "Code Compassion".
