Nominated by daughters of a patient:

Clifton definitely has demonstrated all of the wonderful attributes of a DAISY nurse. He has been very informative during each step of our dad's care, progress, and recovery. He has a calm, confident manner that helps to ease a family member's concerns.

Clifton was our dad's nurse for two days in 3E ICU at Mercy. Our dad had heart valve replacement surgery in March, 2014. He then had to be opened a second time to check for bleeding, so he had a harder time recovering. This left us very worried due to the extra problems dad encountered.

Clifton helped to ease our fears, make us comfortable, and serve our dad in a most competent manner. Dad was very difficult to arouse following two rounds of general anesthesia. Some others used loud startling voices to awaken him but Clifton used a calm, moderate, firm voice. He kept us informed of every procedure and every medicine dad needed, as well as patiently answering our dozens of questions.

When dad seemed to show signs of having a stroke, Clifton acted quickly and took measures to ensure dad wasn't experiencing a carbon dioxide imbalance or reacting to his narcotic pain medicine. Very quickly a doctor was called in and a CT scan ordered.

Amidst all of this, Clifton remained personable, kind, and caring. We shared a bit about our lives, and even showed each other pictures of our children. When we transferred off 3E ICU, we felt like we were leaving a friend.

Clifton made a very stressful, very difficult time much easier to bear. We wish dad had never experienced a heart condition that needed to be fixed, but as we think back over that week, it is not all a bad memory. We will remember a very good and kind person, and an excellent nurse, Clifton Satterfield.
