A Veteran called to the Emergency Department to speak to anyone. Cindy Morris answered the phone to find a very distraught female veteran on the other end ready to take her own life. She did not feel she had any purpose or that life was going to get any better. She stated she lost her husband and life was too hard for her. Cindy, with her calm demeanor and quick thinking, wrote a note to another ED RN telling her to call 911 for a wellness check immediately for this Veteran. The Veteran had the pills in front of her ready to take all of them. Cindy kept the Veteran on the phone talking and telling her someone is coming to help her and to bring her to the VA so she can get help. Cindy's compassion and quick thinking kept this female on the phone talking until the Sheriff's Department personnel arrived at the veteran's home to bring her to the VA ED. This Veteran made it to the ED safely and was admitted to the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit to start getting the help she needed.
