My wife and I are both pediatricians. We weren't quite sure what to expect being on the "patient side" for the first time when my wife went into labor. We are attending physicians in newborn nurseries but it's just not the same. Nerves and anxiety came to the forefront and medical logic moved to the back burner. I can't say enough about our nurse Cindy. We came in at 3 a.m., had a great experience with our night nurse but were dismayed when shift change came quickly and we hadn't progressed much. Cindy made the transition of care absolutely seamless. She played every role a caretaker can play and did it with a smile all day long. Her anticipatory guidance was phenomenal, her bedside manner heartfelt and her professionalism was that of a seasoned OB/GYN.
Cindy not only made my wife and I feel welcome, important, and cared for, but also did the same for each and every visitor we had. Four people came to see us before the delivery. Four times we heard how great our nurse was. She has a wonderful manner in the way she engaged families.
I work at a different institution. I wish I could have my medical students shadow Cindy for a day to see how truly empathetic and skilled medical care can be delivered. Simply put, Cindy is the best. She made our hospital stay that much more special. If anyone deserves recognition for hard work and extraordinary care, it is Cindy Beren.
