Christopher is one of the hardest working nurses on our unit. He treats each of his patients as if they are his only assignment, and is one of the most empathetic and sincere people I know. A really good example of this is when a patient on our unit was confused; receiving palliative care, with the majority of their family living out of state and unable to visit as often as they would have liked. Chris went above and beyond to care for this patient. He treated them like his own cherished family member. At night, because they seemed to be most awake and coherent, he would go into their room and spend his free time with them. He was always able to achieve what the rest of us could not, which was keeping the patient calm and comfortable. The patient had a radio in their room, and Chris would play music and sing to them. Their most favorite song was "You Are My Sunshine" and they would sing it for him whenever he entered their room. During one shift, he even gave them a manicure and hand massage. Chris never did this for the recognition. He did these things to make the patient feel special and loved since their family could not be there. If I ever found myself in the same unfortunate circumstances, I would want Chris to be my primary nurse. I feel confident that I would not only receive skilled nursing care but that Chris would have a personal stake in my well-being. Not because he is my colleague, but because he does this for all of his patients. While it is true that he is a highly skilled and knowledgeable nurse, above all, he puts his entire heart into caring for each and every single patient. This is not a skill that can be taught or learned. It is a skill that is admired and appreciated by those lucky enough to call him their nurse.
