I want to compliment your department and 2 specific employees for going the extra mile on 30 Dec 2009. I received a patient from the ED at approximately 1830 hrs. The patient was experiencing an intracranial bleed in the worst location, the PONS/brain stem area and had only a field start IV access. The neurosurgeon ordered, numerous IV medications stat including mannitol and FFP. While settling the patient initially, his situation was deteriorating and I realized his situation would soon require a central IV access, which the intensivist was not able to place. I called the PICC team and explained the situation and although they were on the way to 2 east to place a PICC, they were more than willing to accommodate my situation. They were at the bedside within minutes, and Shandria was setting up the table while Christina was assessing and prepping the patient. After Shandria prepped the kit/table, she left the room to tend to other PICC team needs. Christina, although new to the team was amazing. Within minutes the PICC was placed and the X-ray done, read and good to go. Wow! Their technical expertise and willingness to be flexible allowed our facility to limit a life threatening intracranial hemorrhage. Within an hour of my calling your PICC nurses, I was administering FFP, mannitol, vitamin K IVP among other things. I realize it is in our job descriptions to perform the task which we have trained for, but our job description does not require we excel as did your team! Kudos to Christina Piloni and Shandria, as well as the department as a hole. Having worked as a travel nurse for 10 years in numerous facilities, I can without a doubt say that we at Santa Rosa Memorial have a top notch PICC team! Thank you for what your nurses do!
