Recently a patient in the SICU was in need of chemotherapy. All of the ICUs were running at capacity and there were no ICU resources available to provide this care. I reached out to Christian who is one of the nurses who completed training for chemotherapy competency on the Intermediate Specialty Care Unit. She was driving home from an out of town trip and when asked if she would consider taking care of this ICU patient without any hesitation she said yes! Christian brought her resources from home and reviewed all the details in the orders. She spoke with the SICU nurse, met the patient and family and explained that she would be with them every step of the way to ensure the medication was administered safely. Christian contacted the pharmacist and PCF on the oncology unit when a discrepancy was noted. Ultimately, she completed the administration and the staff and team were grateful that this critical component of patient care was not delayed. Christian showed genuine compassion for a patient outside her home unit and is a role model to others. She makes proud on many days but this one stands out. She showed courage and strength in stepping outside her comfort zone to put "her" patient first. I believe she embodies all the aspects of a DAISY Nurse.
