Cheryl demonstrated clinical skill and excellence by clearly showing her nursing knowledge in the care she provided. She was consistent in giving me the timely option of taking my pain medication as well as keeping up on the medication that was necessary in my recovery. I unfortunately had a minor complication after my surgery (which led me to stay an extra night in the hospital), and Cheryl made it a point to ask how I was doing. While I was there for those two days, Cheryl showed a genuine interest in my well-being from asking me how I was feeling physically to how I was holding up mentally from being away from my two young children. Given the nature of my surgery (hernia repair) I immediately noticed how compassionate Cheryl was when I had to do anything physical (like sitting up or getting out of bed). She gave me tips on getting out of bed, displayed the utmost patience when she told me to take my time, but most meaningful, she held out her hand for me.

The quality that stood out the most for me in Cheryl was her compassion. When she saw I had to stay an extra day, she gave me a sincere hug and reassured me that everything would be alright. On one occasion, Cheryl emptied out my drainage bulb without waking me up because "I was sleeping so peacefully." She talked with me when I needed, warmed me up with blankets when I was cold, and brought out a lighter side with jokes and laughter when things were confusing or low for me.

I have had a few surgeries in my life that have led me to meet many healthcare professionals. Cheryl stands out to me because she is unique in her field and a true healer. I hope she does not go a day without knowing what a "gift" she is to her profession.
