One day, the OB unit was busy, so Charla, the Lactation Consultant, offered to help out in staffing in the Triage area. A patient came in with a complaint of uterine contractions, was examined and had extended fetal monitor. After two hours of monitoring with no cervical change, the patient agreed with being discharged home. This being her fifth baby, she preferred to be at home during the early stages of labor. When Charla went back to triage the patient stated "she didn't feel right". Charla requested more monitoring and following of the patient. There was a deceleration which prompted an admission. Later the patient started bleeding and fetal heart tones were down. The patient was crashed for abruption. Charla continued into the OR with the patient and circulated the c-section. Even though her true title is a lactation consultant, Charla is an experienced OB nurse. If Charla would have discharged this patient instead of listening to the patient when she said she didn't feel right, the outcome could have been catastrophic. Charla demonstrated Excellence and Ownership. Not to mention going above and beyond her job duties. Charla works in staffing for us whenever asked and sometimes even overtime. We are very thankful and appreciative that she maintains her OB background with us.
